If you are getting a divorce, serving divorce papers is part of the process. You need to provide proof of service in order to move forward with your case.
But, what does it mean to serve papers? This guide explains all that you need to know.
When you file for divorce, you submit paperwork to the court to get the process started. Your spouse must be notified that you have initiated divorce proceedings. Serving divorce papers is the process by which your spouse is provided with this notification.
Serving divorce papers simply means giving copies of the court papers to your spouse. The exact specifics of how you must do that vary by state and can depend on exactly what court forms you filed.
However, in general, your spouse needs to be provided with a copy of the complaint along with a summons. These may have different names in different states but a complaint sets out what you’re asking for and a summons tells them when they must appear in court.
